The beta version builds on OpenOffice.org 2.4 office productivity suite released in March. With improvements in word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database applications, it said OpenOffice 3.0 beta supports workbook sharing, Microsoft Office formats, and OpenDocument Format (ODF) 1.2 standard. It is compatible with Mac, Windows, Linux, and Solaris.
It is available now for free download from the company's website, with September set as the tentative release date for the final version.
